I also believe nearly all of the earlier BG reels were silent out and light click in. The newer BG reels have square as opposed to V or saw shaped teeth I believe.Īpparently to make owner conversion possible without the tool or sending the reel to Abel.

It really is a pretty reel and I will ponder it this weekend. I would go for this deal in a second if you are in the market for a beautifully made small reel.Īlso, the lines are likely 100 and up to replace on their own and a great bonus if you can use them. You can tell by opening the reel and if the teeth are saw shaped, at an angle, I believe this is the older version.Ī google search of converting an Abel Big Game reel left hand to right hand - or something similar, will fill you in exactly on these details. One thing to note is that the older BG reels need a 50 or 75 tool (still available) to convert from LH to RH or vise versa. The BG reel in excellent shape on its own sells for 225 to 275 typically.Īs this is a standard arbor reel, you will find it looks very handsome on a light line cane rod I am sure. The price under 300 is excellent for the package you described. Please note though Greg that the BG 0 is a 34 wt or a half line 5 DT. Great on longer light line graphite rods also, or mid length glass. I think the BG 0 would work well on a cane rod of 712 feet or so, or 8 feet. The advantage of the San Miguel though is light weight for shorter rods, the advantage of the Abel is a bit more heft, and they are better on slightly longer rods if you are discussing the BG series as opposed to the click pawl TR. I have San Miguels too, which cost twice as much or more, and I dont think they are superior to the Big Game reels, both are excellent and have infinite disc drags.

I personally have a few now and can tell you that for fit, finish (maybe the best anodizing ever put onto a reel), cosmetics (I love the rosewood and other exotic wood handles), durability, smoothness and reliability you will not likely find a reel which surpasses.Ībel has been around for awhile, Steve and Gina started the Big Game reels in 1988.Īnd I can say that it is a bit of a modern classic now in the standard arbor design. It is a relatively heavy reel for its size which helps in balance.ĭoes anyone have this reel or an opinion of it for bamboo It sure seems to be of quality.
